New England Association of Schools and Colleges
Commission on Public Secondary Schools (CPSS)

Indicator 11

Professional development activities shall support the development and implementation of the curriculum.

What to Look for:

Do the district and the school provide multiple opportunities for teachers to engage in professional development toward curriculum improvement?

  • a wide array of professional development activities is offered based upon curriculum needs identified through the curriculum review and evaluation process; these activities are intensive and long-term, not “one shot” efforts
  • the school uses assessment data to guide the planning of curriculum-related professional development
  • teachers are supported and encouraged in their efforts to meet together frequently to critique and improve their own classroom curriculum
  • teachers are supported in their efforts to seek additional staff training outside the district regarding the development and implementation of the curriculum
  • the school has the ability to provide focused professional development to the entire faculty as needed
