New England Association of Schools and Colleges
Commission on Public Secondary Schools (CPSS)

Indicator 6

The school shall provide opportunities for all students to extend learning beyond the normal course offerings and the school campus.

What to Look for:

What opportunities are offered for student learning to occur beyond the regular course offerings and the school campus?

  • school-to-work opportunities (e.g., internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing experiences, school-based enterprises, and cooperative education) are available to all students
  • extensive co-curricular opportunities are available that cater to a diverse set of student interests and needs
  • community service programs and other service learning opportunities are available to (perhaps required of) all students
  • distance learning (e.g., college courses via satellite) or e-learning is available to allow students access to coursework that would otherwise be unavailable at the school
  • relationships exist with local colleges to allow eligible students to take courses
  • senior project work, independent research, and other intensive study opportunities are offered that encourage students to seek out and/or apply their learning outside of the school
