New England Association of Schools and Colleges
Commission on Public Secondary Schools (CPSS)

Indicator 14

The school board shall support the implementation of the school’s mission and expectations for student learning.

What to Look for:

Does the district’s governing body make decisions and pass policies and procedures that support the implementation of the school’s mission and expectations for student learning?

  • the district’s governing body is a visible and public voice supporting the school's mission and expectations for student learning
  • the district’s plans are aligned with the school’s mission and expectations for student learning
  • in making important policy decisions, the district’s governing body refers to the mission statement and expectations for student learning to guide its thinking, inform its planning, and direct its actions
  • formal policy manuals, which include all policies passed by the district’s governing body, are provided to all school administrators and are used to make relevant decisions (e.g., class size allocation, selection of materials, student handbook information regarding drugs and alcohol, etc.)
  • in turn, policy information that is relevant to prospective decisions by teachers and other staff members is provided in faculty handbooks, or by some other comparable means, by the school's administrators (e.g., field trip policy, student grouping policy, etc.)
